These ships were supposed to produce electricity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Albanian government carried out a suspicious and rushed procurement process to purchase these two TGS vessels, which were brought in by an American company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">However, an international investigation consulted by Hashtag.al revealed that these thermal generation ships produce electricity at four times the cost of the energy that Albania exports. This dismal efficiency caused delays in their activation, but the contract signed by the Albanian government mandates their use.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1044px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-723109-1\" width=\"1044\" height=\"480\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hashtag.al\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Yuri-Kim-Balluku.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hashtag.al\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Yuri-Kim-Balluku.mp4\">https:\/\/www.hashtag.al\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Yuri-Kim-Balluku.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thus, in order to start and operate these ships, fuel had to be secured.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To address this, the Albanian Power Corporation (KESH) placed an order on the international market for an initial supply of approximately 21,000 tons of fuel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This shipment, valued at $11 million, arrived in Albania at the beginning of November 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to exclusive import documents obtained by <em><strong>Hashtag.al<\/strong><\/em>, the importer is KESH, which does not hold a license for fuel import\/export operations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But the real surprise is the company that sold this batch of fuel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The company, \u201cEMAD Energy S.A.\u201d, is registered in Switzerland and sourced the 20,000 tons of fuel from Algeria.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hashtag.al\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Fatura-tatimore.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-723118\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hashtag.al\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Fatura-tatimore-1024x551.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"551\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hashtag.al\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Fatura-tatimore-1024x551.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.hashtag.al\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Fatura-tatimore-300x161.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.hashtag.al\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Fatura-tatimore-768x413.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.hashtag.al\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Fatura-tatimore.jpeg 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Curiously, \u201cEMAD\u201d is also the name of a well-known Iranian missile, which Iran once boasted could annihilate Israel. While the company\u2019s owners remain undisclosed, a set of leaked documents and emails obtained by <em><strong>Hashtag.al<\/strong> <\/em>indicates that this company previously supplied fuel to Albania from Algeria in 2021 in partnership with a Turkish group called ASB Group, which was officially sanctioned by the U.S. last year. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-sdny\/pr\/us-attorney-announces-terrorism-and-sanctions-evasion-charges-against-leaders-billion\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Read more here<\/em><\/span><\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Iranian Leaks Expose Fuel Smuggling Network<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Emails obtained from <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wikiran.org\/leaks\">Iran-Leaks<\/a><\/em><\/span> suggest that in 2021, the administrator of EMAD Group SA communicated with an ASB Group manager in Turkey regarding a shipment of 3,400 tons of fuel to Albania. The price was set by Sonatrach, which is none other than Algeria\u2019s state-owned oil company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hashtag.al\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Sonatrach-email.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-723123\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hashtag.al\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Sonatrach-email-791x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"791\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hashtag.al\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Sonatrach-email-791x1024.jpeg 791w, https:\/\/www.hashtag.al\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Sonatrach-email-232x300.jpeg 232w, https:\/\/www.hashtag.al\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Sonatrach-email-768x994.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.hashtag.al\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Sonatrach-email-1187x1536.jpeg 1187w, https:\/\/www.hashtag.al\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Sonatrach-email-380x493.jpeg 380w, https:\/\/www.hashtag.al\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Sonatrach-email.jpeg 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 791px) 100vw, 791px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Algeria is one of Iran\u2019s closest allies, and both countries have strengthened <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al-monitor.com\/originals\/2024\/03\/iran-algeria-build-closer-energy-tourism-ties\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>their cooperation<\/em> <\/span><\/a>in the energy sector.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">However, further examination of the Iran-Leaks documents reveals deeper Turkish ASB Group ties in Albania.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In 2020, the sanctioned Turkish ASB Group conducted an operation selling Iranian oil worth $36 million, using Albania as a base.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A Turkish-owned company registered in Albania, MAC General Trading shpk, played a role in this scheme. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hashtag.al\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/ASB-Indictment-New-York.pdf\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Read the ruling<\/em><\/span><\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Further emails from Iran-Leaks expose that MAC General Trading shpk\u2019s tax invoice (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hashtag.al\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Invoice-ASB-Mac-General.pdf\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>See invoice<\/em><\/span><\/a>) was processed with an ASB Group subsidiary, but a confidential contract obtained in the email leaks suggests that the Albanian company actually purchased the fuel directly from Iran through a direct deal with the Iranian company \u201cMadolia Group\u201d. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>(<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hashtag.al\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Confidential-mac-general-and-madolia-iran.pdf\">Read the confidential contrac<\/a>t<\/span><\/em><\/span>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This indicates that Albania was used as a base for Iranian oil smuggling operations in 2020, bypassing international sanctions and embargoes.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hashtag.al\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/the-network-scheme.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-723132\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hashtag.al\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/the-network-scheme-1024x878.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"878\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hashtag.al\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/the-network-scheme-1024x878.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.hashtag.al\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/the-network-scheme-300x257.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.hashtag.al\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/the-network-scheme-768x659.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.hashtag.al\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/the-network-scheme.jpeg 1153w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Why Did Albania Enter This Iranian Scheme?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To fully grasp what has happened, one must understand the motive behind Albania\u2019s involvement in this affair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The reason is not Iran itself, but rather the close relationship between Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan, as well as the incompetence of Rama\u2019s Energy Minister, Belinda Balluku, in avoiding\u2014or at least better concealing\u2014these operations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The sanctioned Turkish ASB Group is owned by Sitki Ayan, a businessman who is a key figure in a joint venture with Iran\u2019s military guard through at least 12 companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sitki Ayan is not just a Turkish businessman dealing with Iranians\u2014he is a close confidant of Erdo\u011fan and a member of his inner circle of trusted allies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The access that compromised Turkish companies have had to Albanian government entities like KESH, or their ability to use Albania as a base for sanction-breaking operations, stems from Rama\u2019s close relationship with Erdo\u011fan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Recently, a former Pentagon official, Michael Rubin, claimed in an analysis (<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aei.org\/op-eds\/the-u-s-wont-defeat-china-if-ambassadors-fail-upwards\/\">Read here<\/a><\/em><\/span>) that former U.S. Ambassador Yuri Kim deliberately tolerated this relationship between Rama and Erdo\u011fan because of her publicly stated ambition to become the next U.S. Ambassador to Turkey. <em><strong>\/ Hashtag.al<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false,"gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"html"}]},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Habjon Hasani An energy project backed by former U.S. Ambassador to Albania, Yuri Kim, is suspected of serving as a financial source for a network of Turkish-Iranian companies sanctioned by the United States, businesses linked to Iran\u2019s military guard, and hydrocarbon smuggling.
