EU pact on migration and asylum enters into force


The European Union (EU) Pact on Migration and Asylum has entered into force today, after being adopted in May 2024, reports... Anatolia.

The European Commission announced that the pact reforms the European bloc's framework for migration and asylum, and sets out its new approach to migration.

""For the first time, the EU has a comprehensive framework for migration and asylum, with strong protection of external borders, fair and robust asylum rules and a balance between solidarity and responsibility." said in the statement.

EU member states will from today be able to fully implement the rules in practice.

According to the statement, the pact aims to strengthen external borders through mandatory registration and detailed security checks for irregular migrants crossing EU borders.

It also aims to establish accelerated border procedures in border areas for persons deemed unlikely to be in need of protection, who pose a security risk or who have misled the authorities, along with the rapid return of those who are not authorised to enter EU territory.

The pact provides for shorter deadlines for asylum procedures, as well as stricter rules for abusive and repeated applications.

It also establishes what the European Commission describes as “a fair balance between solidarity and responsibility”, with a permanent and binding solidarity mechanism and the possibility for member states to contribute flexibly.

According to the declaration, the pact also strengthens guarantees for the protection of fundamental rights, including independent monitoring during border control and asylum procedures.

"Member states will continue to adapt and improve the new procedures in the coming months, with the continued support of the Commission and EU agencies," it added. in the statement.
