Taiwan will not be sacrificed or used as a bargaining chip and will not give up its free way of life under pressure, President Lai Ching-te wrote on Facebook on Sunday, adding that US arms sales to the island are a security commitment based on law.
Lai's comments were his first direct reaction to last week's summit in Beijing between US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, which raised concerns in democratically self-governing Taiwan about US support for the island.
Trump said he was still considering whether to proceed with new arms sales to the island that China claims as its own, writes Reuters.
