Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis, in a speech delivered on Sunday at the close of the three-day congress of the New Democracy party, said that Greece is stronger when the party is united, reiterating the government's objective of securing a third consecutive mandate.
“We are more united than ever. When New Democracy is united, Greece is united; when New Democracy wins, the homeland wins,” Mitsotakis said, presenting the election victory as a national necessity and not simply a party objective. He warned against a return to “instability and experimentation,” referring to previous periods of political uncertainty.
Mitsotakis said that a strong economy is a prerequisite for a strong Greece and reiterated the importance of artificial intelligence in improving public administration and the functioning of the state.
Reflecting on the government's record since taking power in 2019, Mitsotakis singled out the increase in employment as a key achievement. "In 2019, unemployment was 18%. Today we have created 600,000 jobs," he said, describing the change as a source of optimism, especially as young Greeks who had emigrated are showing interest in returning.
He also stressed fiscal responsibility, noting that the government cannot pass on excessive debt to future generations and that reducing public debt remains a national imperative. Mitsotakis defended the government's fiscal approach, stating that while important social measures are necessary, they must remain within budgetary limits. He stressed that his administration has already implemented significant tax cuts, which he said are often neglected.
Mitsotakis cited Greece's return to "investment grade" status, increased investment, and increases in the minimum wage, average wage, and pensions as evidence of economic progress.
Looking ahead, the Prime Minister said that the next elections will be held in 2027, when the government's four-year mandate ends, underlining that much work remains to be done. He distinguished between the role of the party and that of the government, and said that by the end of August, all remaining objectives related to the European Recovery and Resilience Mechanism must be met, while numerous infrastructure and development projects must be delivered to the public.
Mitsotakis called for a third consecutive electoral victory, presenting a plan based on three priorities: widely distributed welfare, a safe and protected homeland, and institutional renewal of the state through structural reforms, potentially including constitutional changes.
At the end of his speech, he called on party members to engage with the public immediately and not wait for the election period, saying that the message of the conference must be taken to society. “Let us walk together for the Greece of 2030,” he said.
