A Russian drone hit a high-rise residential building in Ukraine's second-largest city, authorities said, injuring at least five people and defying a three-day ceasefire declared for Victory Day celebrations.
The attack on the building in Kharkiv occurred late on May 9, hours after Russia's annual parade in Red Square ended.
The event, which was significantly more limited compared to previous years, took place amid indirect threats from Ukraine to disrupt it and open, angry threats from Moscow to retaliate against Kiev.
The Ukrainian president released a mocking statement before the event, saying he was authorizing the Kremlin parade.
Ukrainian authorities said dozens of Russian drones were spotted over Ukraine overnight.
Russian officials, meanwhile, reported nearly 100 Ukrainian drones over the Kursk region, which borders Ukraine. Alexander Khinshtein, the regional governor, said no injuries had been reported.
In Belgorod, another region bordering Ukraine, at least eight people were reported injured by Ukrainian drone strikes, according to regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov.
The ceasefire is officially set to end on May 11. Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov told reporters that there are no ongoing discussions to extend the ceasefire.
Also, Ushakov said, there are no plans to resume peace talks, which the United States has pushed forward.
Also speaking to reporters on May 9, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he thinks the war in Ukraine is nearing an end and signaled he wants to negotiate new security agreements for Europe.
US-brokered peace talks to end the full-scale war, now in its fifth year, have stalled in part because of Russia's tough demands, which include the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from territories in the eastern Donbas region that it still controls.REL
