Netanyahu: We are holding talks with Syria, there is progress but peace is still far away

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during the start of a government meeting, declared that “our victories in Lebanon against Hezbollah have opened a window of opportunity that was not previously imagined — the possibility of peace with our northern neighbors.” He added that “talks are taking place with the Syrians, there is some progress, but peace is still a distant vision,” reports YNetNews.

This statement shows Israel's efforts to establish a dialogue with Syria, in a tense regional context, underlining that although the road to peace is long, there are positive signs in this direction.

Since the end of Israel's Long War with its neighbors, and especially after the conflict with Lebanon and Hezbollah, relations between Israel and Syria have been tense and without official diplomatic contacts. However, in recent years, there have been several covert attempts to resume dialogue, focusing mainly on issues of security and stability in the region. Israel's victories against Hezbollah in Lebanon seem to have created a more favorable ground for negotiations, giving hope for the possibility of a future peace agreement between the two neighbors who have been in deep conflict for decades.
