Canada will resume arms exports from Turkey after backing Sweden for NATO membership

Canada and Turkey have reached an agreement to resume Canadian exports of drone parts in exchange for more transparency about where they are used, and it will take effect after Ankara completes ratification of Sweden's NATO bid, Reuters writes.

After a 20-month delay, Turkey moved swiftly this week to approve Sweden's membership of the Western military alliance, including a parliamentary vote and presidential signature, leaving Hungary as the only ally yet to ratify it.

Turkey is expected to send final documents to Washington as soon as Friday, which would clear the way for Canada to immediately lift export controls it adopted in 2020, the two sources said, requesting anonymity.

The deal was reached in early January after months of talks, a person familiar with the process said. A second person familiar with the plan said the parties agreed it would take effect after Sweden's ratification was completed.
