Turkey and the US hold a high-level defense meeting

Turkey's Ministry of National Defense said that a high-level defense meeting was held with the US in Washington, reports Anadolu.

"In the meeting, which was positive and constructive, discussions and exchange of views were held on regional and global security issues as well as on bilateral defense, military training and cooperation in the defense industry", said in the ministry's statement.

The statement states that the next meeting is expected to be held next year in Turkey.

Key defense-related issues between the countries include Ankara's offer to buy F-16 fighter jets from the US, Sweden's NATO membership and Turkey's fight against terrorism, including the PKK/YPG terrorist group, which the US supports.

Officials in both countries have expressed the possibility that the Turkish parliament and the US Congress will soon, almost simultaneously, take steps on the F-16 and Sweden issues.

Turkey has long criticized US support for PKK/YPG terrorists. While Washington claims it is fighting Daesh terrorists with the help of its PKK/YPG allies, Ankara says it makes no sense to use one terrorist group to fight another.

In its more than 35-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK – listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US and the EU – has been responsible for the deaths of over 40 people, including women, children and infants. The YPG is the Syrian branch of the PKK.
