Today is World Cold Day

Today is World Cold Day. This day was set to raise awareness of the importance of refrigeration technologies in everyday life and the 26th was chosen precisely to honor Lord Kelvin's date of birth on June 26, 1824.

World Refrigeration Day was the brainchild of the refrigeration consultant, former president of the UK Institute of Refrigeration, following an agreement between industry trade associations and professional membership bodies from around the world.

The term “refrigeration” is used here in its broadest sense. An example of refrigeration is the storage and distribution of perishable food products.

During the first half of the 20th century, mankind invented fluorine-based refrigerants, based on the progress of chemistry and mechanical engineering. Refrigerants were known to humans much earlier, but mostly consisted of ice or other non-fluorinated refrigerants, such as carbon dioxide, ammonia, or hydrocarbons. These types of coolers had very limited use in homes or certain industries.

During the last three decades, the world realized that the safest and most efficient refrigerants, which were used for decades, were negatively contributing to global warming, ozone depletion and threatening life on the planet in the long term.

Because of this, industry and governments engaged in a legal and research process to find alternatives and control refrigerant emissions while maintaining the pace of human development and lifestyle.
