President Emmanuel Macron has also spoken out about the protests that have 'set Paris on fire'. He compared the scenes of unrest on the Champs Elysees to "war scenes".
"No one should underestimate the shock caused to the people, in France and abroad, after seeing in the media those images that resembled scenes of war," Macron told members of his cabinet.
Organizers of the "yellow vest" movement, named after their distinctive clothing, are protesting against rising fuel prices. They have been joined by many French citizens.
More than 100,000 people took part in Saturday's protests across France. They were largely peaceful, except in the capital, where 8,000 demonstrators gathered. But they later turned increasingly angry as they reflected on the rising cost of living, particularly in rural areas, and complaints about a range of President Macron's policies. At least 19 people were injured and 40 were arrested.
